Ricardo Lemvo is a well-known artist amongst salsa fans (not what you’d expect from a man that was born in Kinshasa as the child of Angolan parents). Growing up in Kinshasa, the young Ricardo was enveloped with Congolese rumba and American soul that was very popular back then. Aged 15 he moved to L.A. as a student, and got captivated by the Latin-American rhythms and sounds. In 1990 he formed the band Makina Loca, operating out of  L.A. and aiming to make a synthesis of African (rumba, soukous) and Latin (salsa, merengue, bachata and bomba) genres. After releasing a first album in ’96, Lemvo has been touring around the world quasi constantly and has played at major venues (Hollywood Bowl/LA, Lincoln Centre/NY, Montreal Jazz, New Orleans Heritage, etc.).
Lemvo sings in six(!) different languages (Spanish, Lingala, Kikongo, French, Portuguese and English) and because of his adventurous and dynamic mix of Cuban and African styles, he has often been labelled as ‘the future of salsa’. In any case, Lemvo and his 9-piece Makina Loca have grown into one of the most exciting latin bands in the world today.
