Non-profit organisation Driewerf Hoera (Dutch for "Three Cheers Hurray") started its activities in 1979 in a pub called Café Lunatique in Eeklo, Belgium. In the beginning it was a jazz café, but it soon became a notorious punk den. In december 1983, the organisation moved its activities to its current location at Molenstraat 165. Since then, it's programming has become very broad (non-classical) and most of the time less punky. From '84 up until '98, the club operated under the name 'De Media', which it changed into 'N9 villa' in '99. From 1999 up until 2006, N9 was running two venues, one being a former movie theatre. This two-venue situation allowed N9 to do some serious construction work during '04-'05 at the N9 villa, turning it into what it is today. But after three (!) fires within one year's time at the former cinema complex (fortunately without anybody getting hurt) we made sure to move out of there as fast as we could.
In 2007, N9 started with the development of a new site at Molenstraat 33. An old bicycle factory was turned into an educational centre, allowing N9 to run one site as a music venue, moving all other activities (mainly dance and music classes) to its brand new location, starting in the fall of 2008. And last but not least, N9 also has it's own festival 'Helden in het Park', a yearly event that has been taking place from '95 onwards on four thursday evenings in summer, luring some 2000 à 3000 visitors each night to free world-oriented concerts. With fifty up to seventy concerts a year, N9's concert schedule has been more or less stable since '95. In order to maintain these efforts, the organization has been receiving financial support from the Flemish government. In 2009 N9 celebrates it's 30th birthday. Hopefully with many more years to follow!
