De muziek uit Ethiopië, en meer bepaald die uit de gouden jaren 60 en 70, staat weer helemaal op de kaart. Dat is te danken aan enerzijds de Franse musicoloog Francis Falceto, die ondertussen al 28 albums uitbracht in de reeks Ethiopiques, en anderzijds aan regisseur Jim Jarmusch, die voor de muziek van zijn film Broken Flowers beroep deed op Mulate Astatke, zeg maar de vader van de Ethiopische jazz. En zie, plots duiken er overal in de Westerse wereld groepen op die zich laten inspireren door de muziek van het immense land (91 miljoen inwoners). Op 8 augustus presenteren we er zo twee, waarbij Black Flower (BE) mag aftrappen. Die omschrijven hun muziek als ‘contemporary & booty shakin’ groovedelique Ethiopian jazz music’. Ze zijn met zijn vijven. Nathan Daems (sax, elektrische melodica, fluit en vocals) is de oprichter van de groep. Een actieve kerel, die naast zijn eigen Nathan Daems Quintet, ook deel uitmaakt van Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra, Orchestre International du Vetex en Va Fan Fahre. Simon Segers is een jonge jazzdrummer, die met De Beren Gieren in 2012 huisorkest werden van de Gentse Vooruit. Hun cd Wirklich Welt So haalde de Focus Knack-top 10 van beste jazzplaten van 2012. Dan is er de jonge bassist Filip Vandebril, die af en toe opduikt bij de dames van Laïs. Jon Birdsong is een Texaan, die in 2003 verhuisde van New York naar Antwerpen. Nadat hij in de USA eerder samenwerkte met Beck en Calexico, deed hij dat in België met zo uiteenlopende acts als Think of One, Stijn, dEUS en Koen De Cauter. De man doet zijn werk op cornet, althoorn en ‘oertrompet’, de conch shell (schelp). Rest nog pianist Peter Lesage. Die stond al eens eerder (in 2002) op HIHP met zijn eigen band Moiano en we zagen hem recent nog aan het werk met Zap Mama-zangeres Lucinda Slim. Lesage duikt zowat overal op, o.a. bij ’t Hof van Commerce, Douglas Firs, Baloji, Gabriel Rios ... We spreken van een vaste waarde in de Belgische rock/pop/funk. We kunnen dus rustig stellen dat Black Flower bestaat uit stuk voor stuk steengoede muzikanten die veel richtingen uitkunnen, dus ook richting Oost-Afrika.
Na Black Flower volgt Imperial Tiger Orchestra (CH), uit Genève/Zwitserland. Ook zij zijn gebeten door de Ethiopische muziek. Meer zelfs, in 2009 hadden ze de eer te mogen optreden op het Festival des Musiques Ethiopiennes in Addis Abeba, de Ethiopische hoofdstad. Dit op uitnodiging van Francis Falceto (zie hoger), die hen in Parijs aan het werk had gezien. De Ethiopiërs wisten niet wat hen overkwam, de vijf concerten die ITO er speelde waren een groot succes. De Ethiopische muziek was op haar hoogtepunt eind van de jaren zestig, begin van de jaren zeventig. De vaak grote orkesten hadden veel werk, vooral op trouwfeesten van de rijken en in hotels. In de grotere steden ontwikkelde zich een eigen muzikale variant, die we kunnen omschrijven als Ethiopische soul. Daar kwam een abrupt einde aan toen Haile Selassie in september 1974 door militairen van de troon werd gestoten. De avondklok werd ingesteld, waardoor het uitgangsleven verschrompelde. De dictatuur duurde 18 jaar, de grote orkesten overleefden het niet. Authentieke platen (vooral singles) uit de gouden jaren zijn nu zeer gezocht, maar quasi onvindbaar en dus peperduur. Maar trompettist Raphael Anker, de grondlegger van ITO, wist er nog een stapeltje van op de kop te tikken. De naam Imperial Tiger Orchestra verwijst naar het officiële orkest van Haile Selassie, het Imperial Bodyguard Orchestra, maar is natuurlijk ook een grap want tijgers vind je niet in Afrika. Het zeskoppig gezelschap bracht tot nu toe twee platen op de markt, de e.p. Addis Abeba (2010) en de steengoede full-cd Mercato (2011). De groep speelt louter instrumentale muziek, waarbij ze gebruik maken van typisch Ethiopische instrumenten als de kebero (percussie) en de krar (lier), maar ook de dholak (percussie) uit India en de Thaise phin (lier). In januari 2012 werd ITO één van de grote revelaties van Eurosonic, het showcase festival dat elk jaar plaatsvindt in Groningen. Ondertussen toerden ze door zowat heel West-Europa, maar ook in Rusland. En in Afrika stonden ze niet enkel in Ethiopië, maar ook in Zuid-Afrika, Mozambique en Zimbabwe. Opmerkelijk toch voor zes blanke jongens uit de Alpen? Een (uitermate) funky party bouwen kunnen ze. Dat bewezen ze in oktober van vorig jaar in de eigen club. Reden genoeg om hen nogmaals naar Eeklo te halen.

And look, suddenly everywhere in the western world groups come up who got inspired by music of the huge country (91 million people). On the 8th of August we present you two of those groups and Black Flower (BE) gets to start. They define their music as ‘contemporary & booty shakin’ groovedelique Ethiopian jazz music’. Nathan Daems (sax, electric melodica, flute and vocals) is the founder of the group of five. He is an active guy who is also a member of the Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orkestra, Orchestre International du Vetex and Va Fan Fahre. Simon Segers is a young jazz drummer who is part of the orchestra ‘De Beren Gieren’ that was resident in 2012 in the Vooruit in Ghent. Their album ‘Wirklich Welt So’ got a place in the top 10 of Focus Knacks list of best jazz albums of 2012. And then there is the young bassist Filip Vandebril who plays occasionally with the ladies of Laïs. Jon Birdsong is a Texan who moved from New York to Antwerp in 2003. After Black Flower, you can enjoy Imperial Tiger Orchestra (CH) from Geneva, Switzerland. They also love Ethiopian music. In 2009 they had the honour to play at the Festival des Musiques Ethiopiennes in Addis Abeba, the Ethiopian capital. Francis Falceto, who saw them in Paris, invited them. The Ethiopians didn’t realise what was happening: the 5 concerts that ITO played were a huge success. The Ethiopian music was at its peak at the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies. The often-big orchestras had a lot of work, especially at weddings of rich people and in hotels. A special musical variant developed in the bigger cities, that we could describe as Ethiopian soul. That ended abruptly when the military dethroned Haile Selassie in September 1974. A curfew was installed, by which the nightlife shrunk. The dictatorship lasted 18 years and the big orchestra didn’t survive this period. Authentic records (mostly singles) from the golden years are very wanted nowadays, but barely findable and hereby very expensive. But the founder of ITO - trumpeter Raphael Anker - managed to buy some of those records. The name ‘Imperial Tiger Orchestra’ refers to the official orchestra of Haile Selassie, ‘The Imperial Bodyguard Orchestra’, but it’s also a joke, because you can’t find tigers in Africa. The six headed company released two albums by far, ‘Addis Abeba’ (2010) and ‘Mercato’ (2011). The group merely plays instrumental music, in which they make use of the typical Ethiopian instruments like the kebero (percussion) and the krar (lyre), but also the dholak (percussion) from India and the phin (lyre) from Thailand. In January 2012 ITO became one of the big revelations of Eurosonic, the showcase festival that takes place in Groningen every year. In the meantime they are touring through Western Europe, but also in Russia. In Africa they not only played in Ethiopia, but also in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Isn’t this remarkable for 6 white boys from the Alps? In our own club in October they have proven that they can party. Another reason to invite them again in Eeklo!
