Mooie, zij het niet gemakkelijke vraag voor een muziekquiz: wat is kenmerkend voor Fats Domino's manier van pianospelen? Antwoord: het veelvuldig gebruik van zgn. triolen (of triplets in het Engels). En hoewel we (dankzij Wikipedia) zelfs kunnen uitleggen wat zo'n triool is, zullen we u daar niet mee lastig vallen. We weten ook waar en wanneer Domino die mosterd haalde. Dat was toen hij voor het eerst It's Midnight hoorde van die andere trioolspecialist Little Willie Littlefield, onze niet te onderschatten gast op 4 december. It's Midnight was Littlefield's eerste grote nationale hit in 1949, hij was toen amper 18. 60 jaar later treedt hij nog steeds (soms) op en hoe! Hij is afkomstig uit Houston/Texas, maar verkaste al op jonge leeftijd naar Los Angeles/California, waar hij o.a. terecht kon in Johnny Otis' Barrelhouse Club. Met KC Loving had hij een tweede hit, maar hij verkocht (volgens onze informatie) 'in a moment of weakness' de rechten aan Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller. Die veranderden de titel in Kansas City, waarmee Wilbert Harrison een wereldhit scoorde. Sneu voor Littlefield's portemonnee! Maar dat mocht allemaal niet deren, Hij trok door de US en speelde met de grootsten (Ray Charles, BB King, Duke Ellington, Count Basie ...). Om die redenen alleen al mag hij bestempeld worden als één van de invloedrijkste rhythm & blues-pianisten 'ever'. De opkomst van de rock & roll deed de blues wat naar de achtergrond verdwijnen en net zoals voor zoveel andere authentieke bluesartiesten in de US waren de sixties en vroege seventies geen prettige tijd. Littlefield kon nog terecht in clubs in San Francisco's Bay Area. Pas in '78 kwam hij een eerste keer naar Europa, waar hij een nieuw werkveld vond. Met groot succes, zo stond hij al in 1980 op Montreux Jazz en in de periode 1980-1997 nam hij 10 albums op voor diverse Europese platenmaatschappijen. Concerten buiten Europa werden zeldzamer. In 2000 stopte hij, na 50 jaar on the road, met optredens.
Hij woonde ondertussen in Nederland, waar hij ging relaxen aan de waterkant (maar ook dagelijks zijn pianotechniek bleef verzorgen). "I went fishing for five years - now I know every herring in Holland by name - it got boring. I feel great and I want to be back with my audience" zijn zijn eigen woorden en sinds 2006 treedt hij opnieuw op, af en toe, als het niet te ver is en hem zo uitkomt. Vorig jaar trok hij nog eens naar de US voor het gigantische Chicago Blues Festival, waar hij vier dagen na mekaar optrad. De laatste avond stond hij, net voor BB King, op het hoofdpodium voor 200.000 wild enthousiaste bezoekers! Hij ziet er minstens tien jaar jonger uit dan hij in werkelijkheid is en brengt nog steeds een verbluffende show. Erbij zijn is simpel: koop een kaartje!
Little Willie Littlefield (born 16 September 1931, El Campo, Texas) is an American R&B pianist and singer. By 1947, at the age of sixteen, Littlefield was already a local attraction on many of Houston's Dowling Street Clubs and was recording for local record shop proprietor Eddie Henry who ran his own label "Eddies".
Influenced by Albert Ammons, Charles Brown, and Amos Milburn his first recording, "Little Willie’s Boogie" was a hit in Texas in 1949, and brought him to the attention of Jules Bihari, one of the Bihari brothers of Modern Records in Los Angeles, California. There, he recorded "It's Midnight", which became a national hit reaching #3 on the Billboard R&B chart. He became a major nightclub attraction and recorded with West Coast musicians such as Maxwell Davis.
Don Wilkerson, Littlefield's old school buddy and the leading saxman in his band, also travelled to Los Angeles, but Milburn promptly stole him to lead his own new band "The Aladdin Chickenshackers".
Modern Records booked Littlefield for three recording sessions during October 1949, followed by more sessions in the following two months at Radio Recorders in Hollywood. During these three months alone, over 22 sides were cut - an astonishing output when compared to most other artists who averaged only two sessions a year. Other musicians for these sessions included Maxwell Davis and Buddy Floyd, guitarists Chuck Norris] and Johnny Moore], and drummers Al Wichard and Jessie Price
In 1952 he moved to Federal subsidiary of King Records, his first session producing "K. C. Lovin´" (written by Leiber and Stoller and later re-recorded by Wilbert Harrison as "Kansas City"). By 1957 Littlefield had moved to Northern California and continued to record for Don Barksdale's Rhythm label in San Francisco where he produced his last hit "Ruby, Ruby".
Littlefield’s recording and his subsequent releases were not successful, although he remained a popular club act in the San Francisco area.
In the late 1970s he toured Europe successfully, later settling in the Netherlands and releasing a number of albums for the "Blues Connoisseur" label. Littlefield built a considerable European reputation with his vigorous boogie-woogie piano playing and smoky singing. He continues to perform occasionally, mainly at festivals.
