Tal National is de populairste moderne band uit Niger. Het collectief rond de charismatische frontman Hamadal ‘Almeida’ Moumine speelt West-Afrikaanse gitaarmuziek.
Hamadal ‘Almeida’ Moumine is leerkracht en rechter en was ooit succesvol voetballer. Maar in Niger kennen ze hem in de eerste plaats als een fantastische en charmismatische gitarist. De man staat sinds 2000 aan het hoofd van Tal National, een collectief van muzikanten dat in wisselende bezetting optreedt.
Tal National speelt tot vijf keer per week een show in Niger. Een ware belevenis, want er staat tot dertien man op het podium. En de shows duren al snel vijf uur. Almeida en co spelen wat ze zelf omschrijvan als West-Afrikaanse gitaarmuziek. Je hoort er heel wat invloeden in want zo goed als alle belangrijke etnische bevolkingsgroepen uit het land (Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, Toeareg…) zijn vertegenwoordigd in de groep.
Tussen het vele optreden door nam de band vier platen op. Geen sinecure, als je weet dat ze daarvoor een mobiele studio en producer laten overvliegen. In het arme land is er namelijk geen professioneel materiaal aanwezig. De meest recente ‘Zoy Zoy’ (2015) doet het net als zijn voorgangers bijzonder goed in de charts. Een bewijs dat de band uitgegroeid is tot de populairste moderne band van Niger.

Tal National is the most popular modern band in Niger. The collective around front man Hamadal ‘Almeida’ Moumine plays West African guitar music.
Hamadal ‘Almeida’ Moumine is a teacher and a judge. He used to be a succesfull football player. In Niger, he is especially known as a great and charismatic guitar player. Since the year 2000, he has been the leading man of Tal National, a collective of musicians that play in several formations.
In Niger, Tal National performs about five times every week. As at times, there are thirteen musicians on stage, watching them perfom is an experience to remember. And their shows tend to last for five hours! They play what they like to call West African guitar music. In their music, all kinds of influences can be heard, since most ethnic populations of the nation are represented in the band.
Whilst touring, the band recorded four albums. Not an easy task, as they have to fly in a mobile studio and a producer. In this poor nation, there simply is no professional equipment available. Most recent record 'Zoy Zoy' (2015) is way up the charts and very popular, just like the previous Tal National albums. There is no doubt that Tal National is the most popular modern band of the moment in Niger.
