The Scientists ontstonden in 1978 in Perth, Australië. In hun vroege jaren speelden ze punk à la Buzzcocks en Ramones. Nadien maakten ze de switch naar wat wel eens Swamp Rock wordt genoemd, want hun muziek werd duisterder, dreigender en broeieriger.
De band, met voorman Kim Salmon, kende nooit commercieel succes, maar bleek wel van grote invloed op de Seattle scene van de jaren '80 en '90 en op acts als Sonic Youth, Mudhoney en The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Henry Rollins noemt The Scientists "een internationaal monument".
The Scientists waren het actiefst tussen 1978 en 1987. Toen brachten ze zeven albums en een hoop singles uit. Nadien volgden nog sporadische shows, onder andere op All Tomorrow's Parties in de UK en US in 2006 en 2007. In 2008 tourde de band door Australië met Sonic Youth.
Eind 2017 bracht de band 'Mini Mini Mini' uit, een cover van Jacques Dutronc. Het was de eerste studio-opname van The Scientists sinds 30 jaar. In mei van 2018 volgt een nieuw album. Voor die gelegenheid tourt de band met de classic 1985 line up, met naast Kim Salmon ook Boris Sujdovic, Tony Thewlis en Leanne Chock.
