Op de tweede dag van Helden in het Park komen Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyaté en BRZZVLL feat Anthony Joseph langs. Beide bands mengen het beste wat Afrika te bieden heeft met Westerse elementen. 't Wordt een avond vol cross-over tussen Afrikaanse grooves, hiphop, spoken word, reggae en jazz.
BRZZVLL FEAT. ANTHONY JOSEPH (BE/UK/TT)
BRZZVLL werd opgericht door saxman Vincent Brijs. De band speelt naar eigen zeggen dance music. Denk daarbij niet aan beats en elektronica, maar wel aan geïmproviseerde fusion jazz, funk en (Afrikaanse) grooves. Met een strakke en funky ritmesectie, sexy blazers en fantasierijke keys.
De band speelt regelmatig op ‘Nuff Said', avonden vol muziek, spoken word, stand up comedy en literatuur. Daar leerden ze Anthony Joseph kennen. Joseph is een dichter, schrijver, academicus en muzikant. Hij werd geboren in Trinidad, maar verhuisde in 1989 naar Groot-Brittannië. Hij staat er gekend als de leider van de zwarte avant-garde. Zijn performances, platen en boeken zijn niet gespeend van de nodige dosis surrealisme.
De klik tussen Anthony Joseph en BRZZVLL was er snel. Na amper drie optredens besloten ze om samen een plaat te maken. ‘Engines’ uit 2014 is het resultaat van een lange improsessie en werd op amper één dag live opgenomen in de studio.
JOE DRISCOLL & SEKOU KOUYATE (US/GN/UK)
De in Engeland wonende Amerikaanse hiphopper Joe Driscoll spreekt geen Frans. En de West-Afrikaanse koraspeler Sekou Kouyate amper Engels. Toch verstaan beide heren elkaar. De taal van de muziek is namelijk universeel.
Het festival Nuit Metis uit Marseille nodigde beide muzikanten uit om samen een concert te spelen in 2010. In amper een week tijd schreven ze een avondvullend programma. Het concert resulteerde in een langdurige samenwerking en de plaat ‘Faya’ (2014, Cumbancha). Momenteel maakt het duo volop plannen voor een opvolger.
De muziek van Joe & Sekou is opmerkelijk. Driscoll rapt, beatboxt en speelt met loops en samples. Kouyate, in bepaalde kringen gekend als de Jimi Hendrix van de kora, brengt deze West-Afrikaanse harp de 21e eeuw binnen. Hij voegt er distortion en andere effecten aan toe. Dat resulteert in een opmerkelijke mix van hiphop, spoken word en funk met afrobeat, reggae en onweerstaanbare Afrikaanse grooves.

BRZZVLL was founded by sax man Vincent Brijs. The band plays dance music. Forget beats and electro, it's all about fusion jazz, funk and (African) grooves, plus a thight and funky rythm section, sexy winds and fantastic keys. The band is a regular at 'Nuff Said', an event filled with music, spoken word, stand up comedy and literature. At Nuff Said, the band met Anthony Joseph, poet, writer, academic and musician. Joseph was born in Trinidad and moved to Great Brittain in 1989. He is known as the leader of the black avantgarde. His performances, records and books are filled with surrealism.
Anthony Joseph and BRZZVLL quickly decided on joining forces. 'Engines' (2014) is the result of a long impro session, and was recorded in just one day.

The American hip hop artist Joe Driscoll resides in Engeland, and surely does not speak French. West African kora player Sekou Kouyate barely knows how to express himself in English. Luckily, there is the universal language of music.
Five years ago, the festival Nuit Metis (Marseille, France) invited both musicians for a concert. They only needed one week to compose an inspiring musical evening. The show instigated an intense collaboration between the two, that resulted in the album 'Faya' (2014, Cumbancha). The blueprints for recording a new album are being drawn up as we speak.
The music of Joe & Sekou is remarkable. Driscoll raps, beatboxes and plays around with samples and loops. Kouyate, also known as the Jimmy Hendrix of the kora, brings this West African harp into the 21st century. He swiftly adds distortion and other effects. The result is an outstanding mix of hip hop, spoken word and funk with afrobeat, reggae and irresistable African grooves.
