Modder is a five-piece sludge & doom formation hailing from Ghent, Belgium. With riffs designed to make your neck break, supported by thundering basslines, grooving drums, industrialist samples and synths, they forge a unique sound in the sludge landscape.

In response to their first EP ‘Mudslinger’ (2020), an impressive 21-minute-long riff fest, Lay Bare Recordings& Consouling Soundsjoined forces and offered the band to bring onto the world their self-produced and by now critically-acclaimed self titled 12’’which sold out within two weeks after its release on December 3rd, 2021.

With its second release ‘The Great Liberation Through Hearing’ (2023) Modder continued to crush audiences with their sonic mayhem adding an ever-growing fan base to their following.

All this with one goal in mind: to obliterate every stage as they take their riff worship to the highest possible sound-level.

THE GREAT LIBERATION THROUGH HEARING

After suffering significant personal losses across the board during the past couple of years, Modder, among other sources, looked towards ‘The Bardo Thodol’ (The Tibetan Book of the Dead) for inspiration and as one of the guides to complete the work that resulted in their 2ndrecord called ‘The Great Liberation Through Hearing’.

Songwriting wise this record also saw all five members bringing their musical ideas to the table. And in doing so, taking the music of Modder to the so called ‘next level’. Alongside that what Modder already does very well, the band has not feared to implement an even wider variety of styles, ranging from grind-& thrash-metal to elements of psytrance and other electronic music.

For the recording of this record the band joined forces with engineers Jonas Everaert & Jannes Van Rossom (Brussels Philharmonic, STAKE, Brutus & Russian Circles a.o. )for two drums recording sessions at DUNK studios in the Belgian city of Zottegem.

While drums  were recorded at DUNK, the rest of the instruments were self recorded/produced in the members their separate home studios. Modder guitarist Mathlovsky signed up once again as mixing engineer / for postproduction at his own House Of Lov studio. And finally,Brad Boatright (Audiosiege mastering studio, Portland, OR) took upon the mastering duties which evolved in a staggering end result.

Artwork and design was once again delivered by the distinguished, UK based graphic-artist ‘Throne’ and came about after close collaboration with the band.

NEW RELEASES

2025 will be marked by Modder releasing not one, but two releases within one year. In March and notably, by popular demand, the band’s 2020 debut EP ‘Mudslinger’ will finally see the light of day as a beautifully designed one-sided vinyl 12”.

But the band’s year will really be crowned by the release of a brand-new album.

Modder’s third full length, entitled 'Destroying Ourselves For A Place In The Sun',is set to be released during the Fall of 2025. Musically speaking, Modder has once again pushed the boundaries for themselves with this new batch of songs.

Building on the previous and widely praised album 'The Great Liberation Through Hearing', the new work is perhaps an even bigger statement.

And in doing so, the combination of 'Sludge' (and by extension all sorts of metal variants) with the even more refined electronic Psy elements comes awfully close to a perfect symbiosis!
