Helden in het Park 2015 - dag 4

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars (SL) / Babara Bangoura (GN)

22 uur: SIERRA LEONE'S REFUGEE ALL STARS (SL)

In 2006 brachten de All Stars hun eerste plaat ‘Living Like a Refugee’ uit.

‘Music to make you feel good’, zoals ze het zelf verwoorden.

On the the fourth and last day of the festival we welcome djembé master Babara Bangoura and Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, a band that mixes several African music styles.

BABARA BANGOURA (GN)

Babara Bangoura was born in Guinee, but calls Brussels home since 1999. He is the president of music school Manding Foli. He is a genious percussionist and a teacher wanted all across Europe and beyond.

Babara has been playing percussion since he was eleven. As a kid, he was part of the Djoliba National Ballet. As the son of djembé master Mamady Keita, he keeps the traditional music of his homeland alive and keeps spreading its message; music can cross any border and the colour of one's skin is never an obstacle in embracing other cultures.

Babara is the number one drummer of his generation. He performed numerous times with Sewa Kan, the legendary band of Mamady. He is also band leader of bands Foli Kan and Bolo Kan and has played with Afro Celt Soundsystem.

In 2014, he released his first solo record ‘La Guinédénou’. The djembé and other traditional African percussion instruments are always the main actors. Babara adds vocals, trumpet, guitar and bass.

SIERRA LEONE'S REFUGEE ALL STARS (SL)

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars was founded in 2005, just after the civil wars that scarred Sierra Leone in the nineties. The musicians met in refugee camps across the nation. They took their music to the camps and played to cheer up as many refugees as possible.

The world got to know the band through the award winning documentary ‘Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars’ by Zach Niles and Banker White. In 2006, the All Stars released their first record ‘Living Like a Refugee’. The songs were born in and around the refugee camps and carry a message of hope, joy, faith and peace.

In 2014, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars celebrated their 10th anniversary with the album ‘Libation’. The music is a mix of all kinds of African styles: highlife and maringa, but also baskeda and gumbe, the local reggae and soukous. The result is music that just makes you want to dance. ‘Music to make you feel good’.

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars (SL)
