Ibibio Sound Machine laat Afrikaanse en elektronische muziek clashen. Je hoort elementen uit West-Afrikaanse funk, afrobeat, disco, moderne post-punk én electro. De band werd in 2010 opgericht in Londen. Frontvrouw Eno Williams heeft Nigeriaanse roots en zingt vaak in haar moedertaal Ibibio, meteen ook een verklaring voor de oorsprong van de bandnaam.
Het achtkoppige Ibibio Sound Machine debuteerde in 2014 op Soundway met de single ‘Let’s Dance’. Datzelfde jaar verscheen ook het titelloze debuutalbum. Ondertussen is de band aan derde album ‘Doko Mien’ (2019, Merge Records) toe. Op die plaat slaagt de band er wonderwel in zijn live-energie vast te leggen. En dat Ibibio Sound Machine live de moeite is, daar kan het publiek van Glastonbury en Rock Werchter 2019 van getuigen.
