CHOUK BWA & THE ÅNGSTRÖMERS (BE)

From May to August 2022, the Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers team went finally back on stage. Playing about thirty concerts in Europe they took the opportunity to record their live set. The connection between the two parts, vodou tradition on one hand, analog electronic rays on the other, is even more profound, with also a kind of rage due to the incredible difficulty of the world.

The musical result is untamed and heavily electric. In-your-face.

A large excerpt from their concert at the Supervue festival in Liege (BE) in July 2022 illustrates this intense energy.

In September 2016 Haitian vodou band Chouk Bwa Libète (WOMEX 2015) meet the Brussels based duo The Ångströmers. Their new project combines a deep dub sensitivity and Haitian rhythm science and spirituality.

Modular synths and other vintage electronic instruments bring another dimension to Chouk Bwa’s music, although obviously it is always the band’s groove and fluent tempo that leads the energy of the ensemble: no laptops, no drum machines. There are certain freedoms that cannot be coerced. Even more, the electronic instruments are wired directly to the drums that feed them with impacts and caresses. All the Vodou families are there with their many rhythms and songs.

Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers had their first performances in 2018 and were quickly selected at Trans Musicales de Rennes in 2019. In May 2020 they released their first album Vodou Ale via Bongo Joe, which received much praise in the press. The two EPs of Ayiti Kongo Dub (2022) are more focused on the dance floor. After a long forced interruption due to the covid crisis they toured in ten European countries from May to August 2022.
