Toeval bestaat niet, of juist wel. We schrijven dit bericht op 17 april en net vanavond stelt Shakara United (BE) zijn debuutalbum (cd/vinyl) voor in de Roma in Borgerhout. Kent u die prachtige zaal in art deco-stijl? Die is in elk geval behoorlijk groot. Exact twee maanden daarvoor stond Shakara United al eens eerder in Antwerpen, toen in Trix, ook aanzienlijk, in een double bill met de Ghanese legende Ebo Taylor (& Odapajan). En zie, begin mei, treden ze op in de 100-jarige Vooruit op de Jubileum ‘13’ party van Flat Earth Society. Maar wie was er het eerst bij dit jaar en wel op 25 januari? Dat was een club in Eeklo, waarvan de naam ons nu even ontschiet, die de tienkoppige bende, toen nog zonder plaat, toch wou uittesten. Het resultaat? In elk geval een serieus feest! En dat van een groep die pas in mei 2011 zijn eerste concert speelde. Maar er is een voorgeschiedenis, die teruggaat naar het begin van de jaren 2000. De tijd voor Kapitein Winokio, want die had het als Winok Seresia toen nog te druk met de Belgian Afrobeat Association. Twintig (!) muzikanten, afkomstig uit Internationals (zie HIHP 2012), Flat Earth Society (zie hoger), El Tattoo del Tigre en Wawadadakwa. Ze overtuigden in 2003 met de cd The King is among us en live op festivals als Open Tropen, Mano Mundo, Klinkende Munt e.d. Maar het opzet bleek te hoog gegrepen, alleen al de kalenders van 20 beroepsmuzikanten op mekaar afstemmen was schier onmogelijk. Het was een onvergetelijke tijd, maar dat het niet zou blijven duren was eigenlijk voorspelbaar en in 2004 viel de bende uiteen. Tot twee van de oorspronkelijke blazers heimwee kregen en in 2011 een eenmalig reünieconcert wilden opzetten. Ze kregen de hele troep niet opnieuw bijeen, maar een aantal zagen het wel zitten. Aangevuld met een paar nieuwkomers waren ze opnieuw met zijn tienen. Het concert vond plaats in Mol en was dermate succesvol, dat er al snel meerdere volgden. In april 2012 stonden ze een eerste keer in de Roma, in een dubbelprogramma met de Amsterdamse Jungle By Night (zie HIHP 2012). Vorige zomer waren ze ook te zien tijdens Polé Polé/Gent en namen ze een soundtrack op voor de documentaire This is my home now van Saddie Choua. Nadien sloten ze zich op in Jet Studio voor de opnames van hun debuut-cd. Die is er nu en laat een groep horen die gezwind uit diverse Afrikaanse vaatjes tapt. Juicht vrienden, want België heeft opnieuw een afrobeat band met internationale allure. Het lag gewoon voor de hand dat Shakara United te zien zou zijn tijdens HIHP. Meer zelfs, ze krijgen de eer om de festiviteiten te openen.
We durven met enige stelligheid beweren dat Mokoomba (ZW) dé opkomende Afrikaanse groep is van dit moment. Ze staan deze zomer werkelijk overal, maar vooral op grote festivals (Roskilde, Amsterdam Roots, Cambridge Folk Festival, Womad UK, Sziget ...). En toch vonden ze nog een gaatje voor een concert in België. Vorig jaar waren Couleur Café en Polé Polé/Gent ons te snel af, maar deze keer waren we er erg vroeg bij. Op 6 oktober 2012 stond dit zestal op het podium van N9 Villa en dat concert was zo overweldigend goed, dat we na afloop onmiddellijk toesloegen. Het bleek maar net op tijd. Even later zagen we hen al terug, op tv dan wel, tijdens Later with Jools Holland (BBC2). En toen ze nog iets later opdoken op Womex (de grootste wereldmuziekbeurs ter wereld) was het hek helemaal van de dam. Wat maakt deze jonge gasten uit Zimbabwe zo gegeerd? Feit is dat ze ondertussen een heel palmares kunnen voorleggen. De groep ontstond in 2001 in een dorp in de buurt van de bekende Victoria watervallen. In 2007 wonnen ze achtereenvolgens het Music Crossroads Local Festival en de gelijknamige National en Interregional festivals. Hierdoor konden ze een eerste cd opnemen en in de prijzenpot stak eveneens een uitnodiging voor een Europese tournee. Met de plaat Kweseka op zak kwamen ze in 2009 een eerste keer naar het Europese vasteland. Ze maakten een uitstekende indruk en sindsdien kwamen ze elk jaar terug. In 2012 verscheen hun tweede cd Rising Tide, die onmiddellijk doorstootte naar de hoogste regionen van de European World Music Charts. Rising Tide betekende ook hun doorbraak in Engeland. With a little help van het (belangrijke) Engelse muziekmagazine Songlines, die de plaat beloonde met 5 sterren (het maximum) en het predicaat ‘Top of the World’. Hoe ze klinken? In elk geval gevarieerd. Langs de ene kant staan ze nog dicht bij de Tongacultuur van hun eigen regio, maar ze kennen de hele Afrikaanse cultuur en verwerken die ook in hun muziek. Plus, jonge gasten zijnde, luisteren ze ook naar hiphop, reggae, salsa e.d., wat eveneens een weerslag vindt in hun muziek. Zodoende krijg je de rijke Mokoomba Pan-Afrikaanse sound, die onweerstaanbaar funky is. De waar wordt met veel enthousiasme en energie gebracht en hun leadzanger Matthias Muzaza beschikt over een aparte maar ook uitzonderlijke stem. Net zoals Shakara United testten we Mokoomba indoor uit in ons eigen laboratorium. Dat beviel prima en we zijn er zeker van dat ze het ook outdoor zullen waarmaken.

There’s no such thing as coincidence, or is there? We are writing this message on the 17th of April and just this evening Shakara United (BE) present their debut album at Roma in Borgerhout. Do you know this beautiful venue in art Deco style? In any case, this venue is quite big. Exactly 2 months ago Shakara United already played in Antwerp (at Trix), in a double bill with the Ghanaian legend Ebo Taylor (& Odapajan). And look, at the beginning of May, they’re performing at the 100 years anniversary party of Flat Earth Society at Vooruit. But who was the first one to invite them, to be precisely at the 25th of January? It was a club in Eeklo, whose name slips from our mind at the moment and who wanted to test the band with 10 members. The result was a big party with a group who released their album in May 2011. But there’s a history that goes back to the beginning of the year 2000. It started years before the beginning of Kapitein Winokio, because at the time he was too busy playing as Winok Seresia with the Belgian Afrobeat Association. Twenty musicians (!), coming from Internationals (HihP 2012), Flat Earth Society, El Tattoo del Tigre and Wawadadakwa. They convinced us in 2003 with the album “The King is among us” and live on festivals such as Open Tropen, Mano Mundo, Klinkende Munt… But the aim was too ambitious: it was too nearly impossible to harmonise the calendars of 20 professional musicians. It was an incredible time, but it was predictable that it wouldn’t last forever. In 2004 the group stopped, until two of the original blazers got homesick and set about a one-off reunion concert in 2011. They didn’t manage to get the whole group together, but a few of the original people were enthusiast. The group was completed with a few new members. The concert took place in Mol and was very successful. Other concerts followed soon. In April 2012 they performed at Roma for the first time, in a double program with Jungle By Night (HihP 2013). Last summer they also played at Polé Polé/Ghent and recorded a soundtrack for the documentary “This is my home now” from Saddie Choua. Afterwards they locked themselves in the Jet Studio for the recordings of their debut album. This album shows a group that uses different African styles. Cheer everybody, because Belgium got itself an Afrobeat band with international allure again! It was meant to be that Shakara United would play at HihP and they even get the honour to open it!
We dare to say that Mokoomba (ZW) is the upcoming African group of the moment! They play everywhere this summer, but mostly at the big festivals (Roskilde, Amsterdam Roots, Cambridge Folk Festival, Womad UK, Sziget…). And still they find the time to do a concert in Belgium. Last year Couleur Café and Polé Polé/Ghent were too fast for us, but this time we were very early! At the 6th of October this sextet performed at the N9 Villa and the concert was so overwhelming, that we struck immediately. Just in time, because moments later we saw them on television, during ‘Later with Jools Holland’ (BBC2). And when they appeared on Womex (the biggest world music exchange in the world), things went crazy. What makes these young guys from Zimbabwe so wanted? It’s a fact that they can show a great honours list by now. The group started in 2001 in a village near the Victoria Waterfalls. In 2007 they won the Music Crossroads Local Festival, the Music Crossroads National Festival and Interregional festivals. One of the prices was an invitation for a European tour. And after the competition they were ready to record their first album. With the album Kweseka they arrived in 2009 in Europe for the first time. They made a great impression and since then they came back every year. In 2012 their second album ‘Rising Tide’ was released and it rose immediately to the top of the European World Music Charts. With ‘Rising Tide’ their breakthrough in England started. With a little help of the important English music magazine Songlines, who rewarded the album with 5 stars (the maximum) and the prediction “Top of the World”. How do they sound? In any case varied. On the one hand they lean to the Tonga culture of their own region, but they are familiar with the whole African culture and they’ve include it in their music. Besides, they are young guys who listen to hip-hop, reggae and salsa. Sounds you can find in their music. All these factors result in a rich Mokoomba Pan African sound, that is irresistibly funky! They have a lot of enthusiasm and energy and their lead singer Matthias Muzaza has a very rare but extraordinary voice. Just like Shakara United, we tested Mokoomba indoor in our own laboratory. We liked it very much and we’re sure that they will make it outdoor as well.
