Rod Taylor (JM) is in 1957 geboren in Trenchtown/Kingston/Jamaica (de wijk waar Bob Marley zijn jeugd doorbracht). Hij nam in 1975 (op zijn achttiende) een eerste single op (met Ossie Hibbert). Kort daarna ging hij deel uitmaken van het Freedom Sounds Collective, opgericht door Bertram Brown, dat opereerde vanuit West Kingston. Andere leden van dit collectief waren o.a. Earl Zero, Michael Prophet en Prince Alla. Met Brown nam hij zijn eerste successen op, de singles Ethiopian Kings en In the Right Way. Zijn debuutalbum If Jah Should Come Now kwam er in 1979 en vestigde Taylor’s naam en faam op het Jamaicaanse eiland. De opvolger Where Is Your Love Mankind volgde al snel (1980) en werd uitgebracht door het Engelse Greensleeves, een platenlabel dat nu een zeer uitgebreide catalogus heeft, maar toen nog maar pas begon. Alles ging wel, ook nog in het begin van de jaren 80, toen hij samenwerkte met o.a. Prince Far I, Prince Hammer en Mikey Dread. In 1981 trad hij tot ieders voldoening op op Reggae Sunsplash, het grootste reggaefestival van Jamaica (dat toen pas een derde keer plaatsvond). En nadien werd het stil rond Taylor. Hij had zich teruggetrokken op het platteland en werd boer. De reden? Hij was gedegouteerd geraakt door de muziekbusiness, waarin bedriegen en stelen schering en inslag waren (zijn?). Pas in ’89 dook hij opnieuw op met een nieuw album One in a Million, dat amper promotie kreeg. Idem dito voor Lonely Girl (1990). In ’92 verhuisde hij naar Engeland, maar zijn echte draai vond hij pas in ’96 toen hij naar Frankrijk verhuisde (hij woont er nog steeds en gedijt er goed). Ondertussen zijn er in totaal 14 Rod Taylor-platen, een mooie discografie toch? Taylor, die als zanger vaak vergeleken wordt met Horace Andy, is op zijn 55e nu op het toppunt van zijn kunnen. Na vele omzwervingen vond hij eindelijk zijn plaats in de omvangrijke Franse reggaescène, waarin hij zeer gerespecteerd wordt. In België trad Rod Taylor ondertussen al twee maal op op het gigantische Dour Festival (2009/2012). Deze zomer zal hij content moeten zijn met een wat kleiner podium, maar dat komt wel goed. Rod Taylor is een klassieker en een overlever, die weet dat zoiets kan gebeuren.
Dat HIHP een voorliefde heeft voor muziek uit de Caraïben is verondersteld bekend. En toch is het pas de tweede keer dat HIHP een artiest uit Trinidad presenteert (de eerste was Brother Resistance in 2000). Nu volgt Drew Gonsalves, aanvoerder van Kobo Town (TT/CA). En hoewel afkomstig uit hetzelfde eiland is er toch behoorlijk wat verschil tussen beiden. De basis is dezelfde, de calypso. Maar waar Resistance die moderniseert tot rapso (een mix van hiphop met soul calypso, ofte soca), blijft Gonsalves trouwer aan de klassieke calypso (hoewel hij ook links legt met hiphop en reggae). Gecompliceerd? Helemaal niet, we spreken van feestelijke muziek, weliswaar met een randje. Want calypso was en is muziek van het gewone volk. En dus niet van de machtshebbers, die maar moeten kunnen verdragen dat er, via de teksten, ook commentaar wordt gegeven op sociale en politieke gebeurtenissen. Dat konden de autoriteiten natuurlijk lang niet altijd, met alle gevolgen vandien voor een aantal calypsozangers. Kobo Town verwijst naar de historische buurt van Port of Spain, de hoofdstad van Trinidad, waar de calypso zich ontwikkelde. Gonsalves, een kind van een vader uit Trinidad en een Canadese moeder, woonde tot zijn dertiende in Trinidad. Pa en ma gingen toen uit mekaar en hij verhuisde met ma naar het heel wat koudere Ottowa/Canada. Als coole tiener kon hij het moeilijk toegeven, maar de volkse muziek van zijn geboorteland bleef hem bekoren. En toen hij op zijn 18e op bezoek ging bij zijn pa, nam die hem mee naar Lord Kitchener’s Calypso Revue, waar de originele calypso nog in volle glorie gedijde. Als kind was hij te jong om het te beseffen, maar toen gingen zijn ogen helemaal open, dit was de muziek die hij zelf zou gaan spelen. In 2007 maakte hij met Kobo Town (bestaande uit Canadezen en andere ingeweken Trinidadianen) een eerste cd Independence. De plaat werd positief ontvangen in Canada en beloond met zowel een Canadian als een International Folk Music Award. De schijf belandde ook bij Jacob Edgar, het muzikale brein achter de platenlabels Putumayo (zie de wereldwinkel-cd’s) en het verwante Cumbancha. Die bracht Gonsalves in contact met producer Ivan Duran uit Belize, bekend van zijn werk met o.a. Andy Palacio en Aurelio Martinez (zie HIHP 2011). Ze werkten vier jaar lang aan een tweede plaat, waarvoor ze opnames maakten in Belize, Montreal, Toronto en Trinidad. Het resultaat Jumbie In The Jukebox is er nu en is zeer overtuigend. Kobo Town, nooit van gehoord? Daar zou wel eens snel verandering kunnen in komen ... Let op onze (profetische!) woorden: Kobo Town staat aan het begin van een mooie internationale carrière.

After his single, he became part of the ‘Freedom Sounds Collective’, founded by Bertram Brown, who operates from West Kingston. Other members of this collective were Earl Zero, Michael Prophet and Prince Alla. He achieved his first successes with Brown with the singles ‘Ethiopian Kings’ and ‘In The Right Way’. His debut album ‘If Jah Should Come Now’ was released in 1979 and settled the name of Taylor in Jamaica. The next album ‘Where Is Your Love Mankind’ followed quickly (1980) and was launched by the ‘Englisch Greensleeves’, a record label that started at that time, but has a very extensive catalogue nowadays. Everything went well, even in the beginning of the eighties, when he worked together with Prince Far I, Prince Hammer and Mikey Dread. In 1981 he played at the Reggae Sunsplash, the biggest reggae festival of Jamaica (at that time, it was only the third edition). But then nobody heard of Taylor again. He moved back to the countryside and became a farmer. The reason? He was disgusted by the music industry, where lying and stealing were (are?) very normal. He came back in ’89 with the new album ‘One in a Million’, which barely got promotion; likewise for the album ‘Lonely Girl’ (1990). In ’92 he moved to England, but he was only in peace in ’96 when he moved to France (where he still lives). In the meantime Rod Taylor has 14 albums, which is a nice discography, right? Taylor often gets compared with Horace Andy and is at the peak of his career with the age of 55. He finally got a place in the big French reggae scene and gets a lot of respect. In Belgium he performed twice at the gigantic Dour Festival (2009/2012). This summer it will be on a smaller stage, but everything will be all right. Rod Taylor is a classic and a survivor; he knows that these things can happen.
Helden In Het Park has a preference for music of the Caribbean. And still it’s only the second time that Helden In Het Park presents an artist from Trinidad (the first was Brother Resistance in 2000). And now we have Drew Gonsalves, leader of Kobo Town (TT/CA). And although they’re from the same island, there’s a big difference between the two. The basis is the same, the calypso. But where Resistance modernises to rapso (a mix of hip-hop and soul calypso, also known as soca), Gonsalves remains more loyal to the classic calypso (although he also makes links with hip-hop and reggae). Complicated? Not at all, we’re talking about festive music with an edge. Because calypso was and still is music of the common people and not only of the mighty people, who have to tolerate the comments on social and political events through the text. But they didn’t always tolerate them, with all the consequences that entailed for some calypso musicians. Kobo Town refers to the historical area of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad, where the calypso developed. Gonsalves, a child of a father from Trinidad and a Canadian mother, lived in Trinidad until the age of 13. Then his mother and father got divorced and he had to move with his mother to cold Ottowa/Canada. As a cool teenager he couldn’t easily admit it, but the folky music of his motherland kept pleasing him. When he visited his father at the age of 18, they went to Lord Kitchener’s Calypso Revue, where the original calypso was booming. As a kid he was too young to know, but at that moment his eyes opened: this was the music that he wanted to play. In 2007 he made his first album ‘Independence’ with Kobo Town (that consists of Canadians and other immigrant Trinidadians). The album received positive reviews in Canada and got rewarded with a Canadian and an International Folk Music Award. The album got to Jacob Edgar, the musical mastermind behind the record label Putumayo and the related Cumbancha. He got in touch with producer Ivan Duran from Belize, known from his work with Andy Palacio and Aurelio Martinez (HIHP 2011). They worked 4 years to release the second album and made recordings in Belize, Montreal, Toronto and Trinidad. The result ‘Jumbie In The Jukebox’ is ready and is very convincing. Kobo Town, never heard of it? That could change fast. Mark our words: Kobo Town is at the beginning of a beautiful international career.
