The ABC of Canadian Music is een speciaal samengesteld programma waarin drie jonge vrouwelijke Canadese singer-songwriters hun talenten laten horen en zien. We beginnen -logischerwijze- bij de A van Awna Teixeira. De Canadese met Portugese roots speeldel in verschillende bands en projecten. Ze is vooral bekend van Po’Girl, een band die in 2011 nog op ons podium stond. Ze zingt maar speelt ook accordeon, banjo, ukelele en gitaar. De band doet het sinds 2012 wat rustiger aan, waardoor Awna tijd had om haar eerste soloplaat Where The Darkness Goes uit te brengen. De B staat dan weer voor Brandy Zdan. Ook zij speelt meerdere instrumenten (accordeon, gitaar, lap-steel…) en komt met haar eerste soloplaat sinds vijf jaar, Lone Hunter, naar buiten. Zdan vormde vroeger samen met Dave Quanbury het folk-duo Twilight Hotel en speelt nog steeds in de vrouwenband The Trishas. Cara Luft tenslotte was stichtend lid van folktrio The Wailin’ Jennys, waarmee ze in 2005 een Juno-award (de Canadese Grammy) voor rootsalbum van het jaar won. Ze had de band toen echter al verlaten om zich opnieuw te focussen op haar solowerk. Ze bracht in totaal vier soloplaten uit, waarvan Darlingford de meest recente is. De drie dames, die allen een verleden in de folk en roots hebben, spelen eerst een individuele set. Nadien treden Awna, Brandy en Cara samen, in duo- en triovorm, op.

The ABC of Canadian Music is a program especially composed for three young female Canadian singer-songwriters showing their skills. We start with A of Awna Teixeira. The Canadian with Portuguese roots has already played in different bands and projects. She’s best known from the band Po’Girl that played at N9 in 2011. She sings but also plays accordion, banjo, ukulele and guitar. Since 2012 the band is taking it easy so Awna had time to release her first solo album Where The Darkness Goes. B stands for Brandy Zdan. She also plays several instruments (accordion, guitar, lap-steel…) and has launched her first solo album Lone Hunter 5 years ago. In the past Zdan has formed the folk-duo Twilight Hotel with Dave Quanbury and she’s still playing with the female band The Trishas. Cara Luft was the founding member of the folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, that won a Juno-award (Canadian Grammy) for roots album of the year in 2005. At that moment, Cara had already left the band to focus on her solo album. She has released a total of four solo albums; Darlingford is the most recent one. The three ladies, who all have a history of folk and roots, will play individual sets in the first part of the evening. In the second part Awna, Brandy and Cara will perform together in duo and trio.
